The share of Britons who think Labour cares about ordinary people has hit a new low of just 24%. A majority (51%) now think Labour “cares about only a select few”. Nearly six out of 10 people (59%) say Labour is “untrustworthy”. A mere 15% think Labour is trustworthy – the lowest level since October 2019 – according to the latest YouGov polling.
The findings are a blow as Sir Keir Starmer and Rachel Reeves’s party prepares for next month’s local and mayoral elections. Only 14% say Labour is “in touch”. This is down from 17% in February and is at its lowest level since May 2021. A total of 62% said Labour was “out of touch”. Two months ago, 27% said Labour cared about ordinary people. The fall to 24% is the lowest figure since the pollster first asked the question in 2019.
Just 29% think Labour is trying to do the right thing rather than serve its own interests – the lowest level since October 2019.

YouGov’s Beth Kühnel Mann pointed to differences in attitudes between age groups, saying: “Among people aged 18-24, 36% said that Labour cares about ordinary people while 34% disagreed. However, when you look at those aged over 65, 60% said the party cares only about a select few while only 17% thought it cared about ordinary people.”
This will concern Labour strategists as the elections near because older voters are traditionally more likely to vote.

Reform UK deputy leader Richard Tice responded to the polling, saying: “Keir Starmer’s Labour Party is a middle-class, north London-dominated party full of human rights lawyers who care more about meaningless diktats from foreign courts than they do about working people.
“After cutting winter fuel allowance for pensioners and paying billions to house record numbers of illegal migrants, it’s no wonder that the vast majority of Brits no longer trust the Labour Party.”
