Southport killer Axel Rudakubana’s life of ‘hell’ in Belmarsh revealed by ex-inmate

Aexel Rudakubana, the knife-obsessed teen behind the murders of three schoolgirls in a Southport dance class is preparing for his first Christmas in jail, facing a minimum term of 52 years. A former inmate who served time alongside him told The Sun the attacker now faces “hell” behind bars.

The 18-year-old, who will not be eligible for release until he is close to 70, is expected to remain isolated at HMP Belmarsh throughout his sentence.

Segregated after attack on officer

Rudakubana was moved to a segregation cell earlier this year after throwing boiling water from a kettle over a prison officer.

He now faces so many threats from inmates that he has been placed alone in a cell containing only a mattress and frame inside the Category A facility.

The ex-prisoner, released in the summer, said: “I know sometimes the perception is that prison is cushy.

“But trust me, in Belmarsh it’s not. He is being shown no mercy in prison.

“He is at risk every day and was incredibly stupid to ‘kettle’ the screw so early into his sentence. I wouldn’t be surprised if he spends the rest of his sentence in solitary.

“All the inmates hate him, and the prison officers won’t be happy with him either because he attacked one of their own.”

Attack on officer under investigation

British-born Rudakubana came under investigation in May after he threw boiling water through the hatch of his cell door, injuring a monitoring officer.

The Metropolitan Police confirmed the investigation remains ongoing.

Rudakubana was only 17 when he killed Elsie Dot Stancombe, seven, Alice Aguiar, nine, and six-year-old Bebe King at a Taylor Swift-themed dance class on 29 July 2024 in Southport. He also attacked eight other children, instructor Leanne Lucas, and businessman John Hayes, who tried to disarm him.

The teenager was sentenced at Liverpool Crown Court to a minimum of 52 years for three murders, ten attempted murders, and additional charges including producing ricin, possessing terrorist material, and carrying a knife.

The former inmate told The Sun that Rudakubana had been moved to the Contingency Suite near the medical unit, known as “Broadmarsh” by prisoners. The suite has previously housed Soham killer Ian Huntley, preacher Anjem Choudary and activist Tommy Robinson.

‘He’s just in a box’

The unit is the only one of its type in the UK and keeps prisoners completely isolated for their safety and that of staff. It includes its own exercise yard and private visiting room.

Our source said: “The unit is near the medical area and only has a couple of cells. A guard sits outside 24 hours a day and checks on the prisoner every 30 minutes, including during the night.

“Only the Governor and one prison officer have a key for it.
